Mount Calvary Baptist Church Receives the Widow’s Mite Award

Rockville, MD — MMBB Financial Services recognized Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Rockville, MD, for its unwavering devotion to promoting the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering (RMMO), presenting them with the Widow’s Mite Award on December 6, 2015.

“The Widow’s Mite Award goes to a congregation that embodies the spirit of humble appreciation and sacrificial giving which Jesus highlights in Luke 21:1-4,” commented the Rev. Dr. Perry Hopper, Associate Executive Director at MMBB Financial Services, during the presentation of the award. “Mount Calvary Baptist Church mirrors this spirit. Your church’s consistent commitment to blessing those who have been dedicated servants to God’s people is indeed praiseworthy.”

The roots of RMMO go back to the mid-1930’s, when American Baptist congregations received a Communion Fellowship Offering on the first Sunday of each month to support retired ministers, missionaries and their widowed spouses within their churches. In 1977, American Baptist Churches USA launched the RMMO to continue this tradition of thankfulness for God’s faithful servants.

“Mount Calvary is a generous church,” observed their pastor, Rev. Leon Grant. “We realize that God has blessed us and we are called to bless others. This congregation is passionate about giving and to responding generously to the four American Baptist Church national offerings because we love people and love to help people.”

Commitment to missions and service is woven into the fabric of Mount Calvary’s ministry through the many ways they serve Montgomery County and the greater Washington, D.C. area. For many years, they have designated every fifth Sunday as Mission Sunday. The church recites A Celebration of Giving Litany that focuses on how we are called to model God’s generosity in our behavior. Rev. Grant declares, “It is all about giving and giving back.”

Each year, MMBB gives the Widow’s Mite Award to commemorate the 1982 gift of a Vietnamese woman who, not knowing the full intent of the offering, but understanding the words—“thank you”—printed on the RMMO offering envelope, slipped off her only possession of value—her wristwatch—and placed it in the envelope. The Widow’s Mite Award, like the act of the poor widow at the temple treasury whom Jesus commended, reflects the grace of giving.
