“Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching; for the scripture says, ‘… the laborer deserves to be paid.”
- 1 Timothy 5:17-18

Ministers and congregational leaders routinely collaborate on matters of faith, spiritual health, and the day-to-day functioning of the congregation. Then – once a year – they address the sensitive issue of the minister’s compensation.

For over 100 years, MMBB has counseled churches and faith-based organizations on compensation and related matters. This guide offers you the benefit of that experience. It is intended for both churches and ministers, as well as for chaplains, pastoral counselors, and those in other forms of ministry.

This guide provides suggestions on how to design a fair compensation package and how churches and ministers can negotiate constructively and positively to reach a consensus. It explains how the tax code treats different forms of compensation. We believe that both benefit from a deliberative process that brings everyone to agreement on fair compensation.
