  • Level of education, experience, and responsibilities
  • The local cost of living
  • How much similar-sized churches are paying their employees
  • What people with similar skills earn in non-church employment

MMBB Tip: For a senior pastor, consider looking at secular professions with similar education, experience, and responsibilities, like a School Principal. For lay staff, compensation should be similarly based, as well as what your church can afford. Review compensation annually, adjust for inflation, performance, and increased workload.
