Ways you can use AI in ministry:

  • Strengthening Church Operations and Administration
  • Enhancing Communication and Engagement
  • Supporting Ministry and Pastoral Work
  • Leveraging Business and Enterprise AI Tools
  • Prioritizing Security and Responsible Use

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer science fiction—it is a present-day tool reshaping how organizations operate, communicate, and serve. For churches, AI offers new ways to strengthen ministry, streamline administration, and extend their reach. When used thoughtfully, it can free up time, enhance engagement, and support more effective stewardship.

Strengthening Church Operations and Administration

Many churches today face the challenge of doing more with limited staff and resources. AI can help address this reality by improving everyday operations.
Administrative tasks—such as scheduling, drafting emails, organizing records, and preparing reports—may be completed more efficiently with the assistance of AI-powered tools. These systems can summarize meeting notes, generate action items, and assist with budgeting or data analysis, allowing staff to focus on higher-value work.

Human Resources related tasks that AI can perform include drafting job descriptions and interview questions; screening resumes for key qualifications; creating onboarding checklists; analyzing staff survey feedback; and helping draft policies, employee handbooks and training materials.

AI can also support financial administration. By analyzing giving trends or identifying patterns in expenses, it can help leaders make more informed decisions about resource allocation. While AI should not replace human oversight, across the nonprofit sector, AI is increasingly used to streamline back-office functions and improve operational efficiency, helping teams stay focused on their mission. ¹

Enhancing Communication and Engagement

Communication is central to ministry, and AI can play a valuable role in enhancing how churches connect with their congregations.

AI tools can assist with:

  • Drafting social media content and promotional materials such as flyers.
  • Translating content to reach multilingual communities
  • Repurposing sermons into articles, study guides, or digital content
  • Editing or proofread written content, such as newsletters or devotionals
  • Assist with video production and editing

These capabilities enable churches to maintain consistent, high-quality communication while saving significant time. Many nonprofits are already using AI to improve engagement and deliver more timely, relevant messaging to their audiences. ²

Supporting Ministry and Pastoral Work

While AI should never replace personal relationships, it can support and enhance ministry efforts.

For example, AI can help:

  • Organize sermon research and outline preparation
  • Generate ideas for Bible studies or small group discussions
  • Create volunteer schedules
  • Summarize feedback from congregational surveys

By handling repetitive or research-heavy tasks, AI allows pastors and leaders to invest more deeply in prayer, discipleship, and community care.

It is vital to stress that AI should always be used as a support tool—not a substitute for pastoral discernment. The heart and soul of effective, impactful ministry is always people-centered, relational, personal and authentic. ³

Leveraging Business and Enterprise AI Tools

As churches consider adopting ways to use AI, it’s important to recognize the difference between consumer-grade tools and business or enterprise-level solutions.

Free or public AI tools can be useful for simple tasks, but they may lack the security, privacy protections, and administrative controls needed for organizational use. By contrast, business and enterprise AI platforms are designed with stronger safeguards, including:

  • Data governance and access controls
  • Secure storage and encryption
  • Role-based permissions and audit capabilities

Organizations are encouraged to carefully evaluate AI vendors and prioritize trusted platforms that offer good customer technical support and business or enterprise subscriptions. This step protects sensitive data and aligns with your church’s needs. 3 For churches handling member information, financial data, and pastoral records, these protections are essential.

Prioritizing Security and Responsible Use

As churches adopt AI, security and responsible use must remain top priorities. AI systems rely heavily on data, which means improper use can increase risks such as data breaches or unauthorized access. 3

To safeguard their communities and maintain trust, churches should:

  • Limit the use of sensitive or confidential information in AI tools such as personal names, counseling notes and even names of ministry programs.
  • Refrain from placing congregant or staff contact information in AI because any information used with an AI tool is stored and saved by that tool.
  • Limit who can access your church’s business or enterprise AI platform to only the staff who need to use it. This also saves on the cost of your subscription since rates are based on how many people use the tool.
  • Choose platforms with strong security protocols.
  • Establish a clear AI policy and guidelines for staff on appropriate AI use before implementing AI tools.
  • Provide training to ensure responsible and consistent practices.

Developing an internal AI policy can help define how technology is used and ensure alignment with the church’s mission and values. 3

In addition, keep in mind that content generated by AI is not always accurate, so data produced by AI should be checked. Think of AI as your college intern: it is helpful, but its output must be reviewed before publication or distribution.

Moving Forward with Wisdom and Intentionality

AI is a powerful tool—but like any tool, its value depends on how it is used. For churches, the goal is not simply to adopt the latest technology, but to use it in ways that support ministry, strengthen community, and reflect faithful stewardship. In doing so, organizations can ensure that technology serves the mission and is not a substitute for it.
