What If

Dependent Loses Eligibility

Events in your dependents' lives, such as reaching a certain age, marrying or ending full-time studies, may make them ineligible for coverage under your health care plans. Continued coverage may be available to your dependent for a limited time, if you act within 30 days after your dependent loses eligibility for coverage.

Here are some steps you may take:

  • Check alternative health plan eligibility and costs for your dependent, such as coverage available through school or an employer.

  • You may need to drop coverage if your child becomes ineligible. If you're enrolled in MMBB-sponsored medical and dental insurance, you have 30 days after your child is no longer eligible for coverage to elect continuation coverage for a limited time.

  • Adjust contributions to your health care flexible spending account (FSA). A health care FSA lets you set aside pre-tax dollars to pay family health care costs not covered by another plan. If your child is no longer eligible for your health care coverage, this may change your expenses, so you may wish to change the amount you set aside.

  • Adjust contributions to your dependent care flexible spending account (FSA). A dependent care FSA lets you set aside pre-tax dollars to pay eligible dependent care expenses for a child under age 13 or a disabled adult. See if the change in your child's situation affects your dependent care expenses.

  • Update your records. Contact your employer if you want to change your tax withholding or your emergency contact information.

  • Change your beneficiary designations as needed for life insurance and retirement programs to be sure they are up-to-date. If you're not sure who you've named, you may wish to submit updated beneficiary forms for your MMBB benefits.

  • Speak to your lawyer if your child's change affects any legal documents or beneficiary designations involving a trust or guardianship arrangements.

  • The Tools section can help you model the effect the change in your child's situation could have on your future savings needs and how much you want to set aside for a health care flexible spending account or a dependent care flexible spending account.
