Retirement then and now. A hundred years ago, Social Security didn't exist, and employers offered no pensions. But then, average life expectancy was about 50 years.
Now, many people spend a third of their lives in retirement. They rely on several sources to fund that retirement: Social Security, personal savings, retirement plans and other assets, including home equity. Sadly, church workers can face special challenges. Lower incomes, lack of employer benefits and even a lifetime spent in church housing can make it hard to build retirement assets.
